Check packet-loss symptoms on Windows without misreading a trace
Use game statistics, bounded ping samples and route diagnostics to collect evidence, while distinguishing missing ICMP replies from game packet loss.
Begin with the game’s network statistics, then use bounded Windows ping tests to a known responding destination for comparison. A missing ICMP reply is a diagnostic observation, not automatically a lost gameplay packet. Intermediate-hop loss requires careful interpretation against the final destination.

The word packet loss needs a destination and protocol beside it. A browser HTTPS failure rate, an ICMP echo test and a game’s reported UDP loss are different observations. Keep those labels in your notes. PC Universe’s ordinary speed test does not produce a raw game packet-loss measurement. Do not turn an unavailable result into zero percent or assume that a website request timeout proves the game lost traffic at the same moment.
Collect a bounded end-to-end sample
Windows ping sends ICMP echo requests and reports returned replies and round-trip times. Use a recognised responding destination supplied by the network owner or official game support. The documented count option lets you collect a finite sample instead of leaving a command running indefinitely. For example, ping /n 50 followed by the official hostname sends a bounded set. Keep its count and destination with the result so another person can understand the test.
Compare the local and external questions
A responding router address can help you investigate the local PC-to-router path, while a public support endpoint includes more of the internet route. Find the actual gateway from your network configuration rather than assuming every router uses the same address. Some devices intentionally do not answer diagnostic traffic. If a target never replies, ask whether it supports the test before concluding that the connection has complete loss. Keep the game’s own observations alongside these comparisons.
Read intermediate hops with restraint
Microsoft explains that pathping gathers repeated diagnostic observations along a route. Its example also distinguishes packets addressed to a router from traffic that router forwards onward. Therefore, a striking intermediate percentage does not by itself identify the cause of a game problem. Look at whether the effect is visible at the destination and persists across repeated samples. Ask support to interpret an ambiguous trace instead of trying to repair someone else’s router based on one row.
Repeat under the condition that causes trouble
Take an idle observation, then a comparable observation while recreating the specific load associated with your symptom. Avoid flood options, unusually large payloads or many simultaneous commands. The goal is to observe the connection, not overwhelm it. Record whether Ethernet changes the result and whether multiple household devices are affected. If the problem appears only on one wireless PC, that is useful evidence for a different support conversation than a failure across every wired device.
Share enough evidence, without oversharing
A support summary should include the incident time and timezone, target hostname, command options, sample length, connection type and the corresponding in-game symptom. Review logs before posting them publicly: network output can contain addresses and identifying hostnames. Send detailed traces through the provider’s official support channel when appropriate. Avoid turning one diagnostic result into a hardware purchase or a security downgrade. Keep the original sample so later comparisons use the same method.
Common questions
Can a normal browser send Windows ICMP pings?
This website’s HTTPS tool does not run the Windows ping command or directly measure that ICMP path. Run operating-system diagnostics yourself when appropriate.
Is one missing reply enough to diagnose my ISP?
No. Repeat, record the target and protocol, and compare with the actual end-to-end symptom.
Why can a middle hop show loss but later hops respond?
A router’s replies to diagnostic probes and its forwarding of other traffic are different behaviours; an intermediate result needs context.
