Read the correct requirement tier
CD PROJEKT RED publishes separate non-ray-traced and ray-traced requirement tiers for Update 2.0 and Phantom Liberty. Use the tier matching the effects you intend to enable. Check the exact CPU, graphics card, operating system and storage requirements at the source before treating a memory-capacity check as a complete compatibility decision.
Write your intended resolution and refresh-rate goal beside the hardware profile. A cinematic preset and a high-refresh target are different workloads; a settings recommendation without that context is difficult to assess.
Choose a city route you can repeat
Create a manual save before a short route that includes the situation bothering you: driving through traffic, walking through a crowded street, or a particular encounter. Keep time of day, weather, camera direction and movement as similar as practical.
Run the route once before collecting your comparison. Keep that warm-up separate from the measured repetitions. A busy city is not perfectly deterministic, so repeat each configuration rather than trusting a single unusually clean pass.
Change one expensive feature at a time
Begin with a clearly named preset and record every override. First compare your baseline with ray tracing disabled. Then test an upscaling mode at the same output resolution. If your device supports frame generation, record it as another separate condition.
Do not merge generated-frame results with conventional rendering results. The displayed frame rate alone does not establish control responsiveness or image quality. Look for fine-detail instability, ghosting and readability while moving through your chosen scene.
Investigate the shape of a slowdown
An average can hide the short pauses that make driving uncomfortable. Import a frame-duration capture when available and note whether spikes cluster around entering a new area, a first encounter, or a sustained heavy scene. Record the capture tool and its definition of low-percentile FPS.
Check storage free space and background activity before changing hardware. If a problem follows a game update, keep the previous measurement as historical context; different versions are not a controlled proof that a component has failed.
Separate local rendering from the connection
For a local single-player session, a browser connection test is not a diagnosis of rendering stutter. Pause launcher downloads during a comparison so disk and network activity do not become changing background conditions.
If you are streaming the game from another device or a cloud service, label that explicitly. The streaming route, video decoder and local network create a different test from rendering the game on this PC.
Keep a result you can use next month
Save the game version, driver, exact hardware, preset, output resolution, upscaling mode, ray-tracing state and frame-generation state. Add a plain-language conclusion such as “street-driving spikes remain, combat is smoother.”
Before buying an upgrade, reproduce the problem in another session and compare a lower render resolution. That experiment can guide further investigation, but it is not a universal CPU-versus-GPU verdict.
Common Cyberpunk 2077 questions
Does meeting the minimum guarantee smooth high-refresh Cyberpunk 2077?
No. The publisher describes specific reference tiers. Your effects, resolution, scene and hardware combination still require measurement.
Should I turn every setting to Low?
Use a Low preset as one diagnostic comparison, then restore settings individually. A blanket reduction can sacrifice image quality without explaining the original slowdown.
Will a lower browser ping increase local FPS?
No. Browser latency and local frame rendering measure different parts of the experience.
