DDR4 or DDR5? Your platform decides.
Memory capacity, generation and supported configurations explained simply.
Generation is a compatibility requirement
DDR4 and DDR5 desktop modules are not interchangeable. A CPU may support both generations across different motherboard models, while the chosen board generally supports only one. Check the exact board name, not just the chipset or socket.
Capacity and speed solve different problems
More capacity helps when a workload runs out of memory and starts paging to storage. Faster memory does not replace adequate capacity. Check real workload usage instead of choosing a number from a generic gaming chart.
Use the manual for installation
Two modules often belong in designated paired slots, but the correct slots depend on the motherboard. Use the manual. Mixing kits can make rated speeds harder to achieve, even if the packaging lists similar specifications.
Profiles are not a universal guarantee
EXPO and XMP profiles can apply settings above standard memory operation. Check CPU, board and memory support before enabling them. If stability changes, return to supported defaults and test systematically. Back up important work before troubleshooting instability.
